How does Cynosure Apogee+ laser hair removal work?

The Cynosure® Apogee+ has two different laser systems that combine to treat unwanted hair quickly, safely, and effectively. The lasers destroy the melanin inside the follicles and severely damage the hair follicles themselves to prevent new growth.

As your treatment provider at Allen Sapadin, MD, moves the laser to target your hair follicles, you may feel a snapping sensation. The SmartCool technology delivers chilled air to the treatment area so you're comfortable and not overheated. Your treatment sessions take just 5-60 minutes each, depending on the size of the treatment area.

How many laser hair removal sessions do I need?

Laser hair removal can permanently reduce your unwanted hair after a series of treatments. Most patients get optimal results after around 6-8 treatment sessions with the Cynosure Apogee+ laser.

How do I prepare for laser hair removal?

Before your first treatment session, your treatment provider at the office of Allen Sapadin, MD, reviews your medical history and personal history with you and completes any necessary testing.

If you currently take medications that affect your reactions to the laser, you may need a "washout" period in which you're not taking the drug. You can shave before your laser hair removal, but avoid waxing or any other hair removal. Don't use makeup, lotions, creams, or anything else on the treatment area before your laser hair removal appointment.

What can I expect after laser hair removal?

Your skin may swell and look slightly sunburned after treatment for anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days. Most patients don't find this uncomfortable, but you can apply ice if needed. In rare cases, patients may get blisters, in which case you can use over-the-counter antibiotic ointment. If this occurs, call the Allen Sapadin, MD, office to let a team member know so you can get customized recommendations.

Some patients experience brown spots (hyperpigmentation) or white spots (hypopigmentation) around the hair follicles after treatment, but those generally fade in 3-6 weeks. Stay out of the sun and avoid tanning beds to reduce the chances of this. Always use sunscreen if you're exposed to the sun.

You'll notice hair shedding for around 21 days post-treatment. You can use an exfoliating sponge to help whisk away the dead hairs starting four days post-treatment.
